As we approach try out season, i get suspicious when 1 coach is named the head coach of several age groups for top teams like MLSN/ECNL? Clubs mind as well just name the DOC imo and be done with it.
Is that normal? How can one coach manage that many team and age groups? As a parent I like to know who will be my son's coach for the year and make my determination to stay with the club/program/coach, verses feeling duped for a year with the switch & bait. At this leave, it's unfair to not be transparent who the real coach is imo. |

I think coaches often have 2 teams they're coaching. If it's more than that, sometimes it's just a placeholder given the constant movement of coaches between clubs. Until they've hired a replacement, etc, the TD or ED may be listed.
Best way to find out is to ask the club directly what the plan is. |

Placeholder alert. It means they don’t really have a permanent coach named.
Last year the club director was named as coach for 4 teams during tryouts. Then when August came around, bam new coach! |
| I don't understand it either. Clubs are holding ID sessions and try outs before the coaching slates are released. |
Run from it. My kid had a ECNL coach who did 3 teams. He just couldnt handle it. Did not communicate and the team is worse then he started with at start if season. |
Doesn’t the TD pick the teams and not the coaches? Coaches have input that I agree is missing but I had though not a coaches call if the kid is on the a b or c teams. |
At all places coaches decide who is on their team. |

Beside asking who will be the coach for the coming season, is asking who are/will be the players DD will/could play with create too much friction at the start? Asking for a friend.
|
That is not normal, no. Usually the A team coach picks first, then the B team picks from who is left , then the C team scrapes the dregs out of the barrel. etc. |
How would that work with dozens of teams? One guy watching all the tryouts? That's ridiculous. |
If your DD/DS are not on the 1st team (or maybe the 2nd team, doubt it though) mention their name to the TD; the TD will be grasping at straws trying to figure out who you are talking about. Such is life. |
No. The TD has his/her own team. They will not 'fill in'.
|
| TDs and DOCs pick the coaches. Coaches as a group put the kids in an age group on teams. Each coach will have the final say- or they should- about their team, but presumably in most cases they agree about placement. TDs/ DOCs don't pick the teams for the whole club, at least not in my experience (four kids over the years at five clubs). |
| Does anyone else find it odd that the dates are out but not coaches, at many of these clubs? I frankly care more about who the coach is than when the date is. I'll make the dates work for the right coach. |
Agree 100%. Would much rather know who the coach will be which will determine if we want to stay or leave.
