Usually placement tests for Math and/or World languages. In some schools there is a a gathering (ccok out, etc) in May. Freshmen also come in before classes begin for orientation.

It will depend on the school. My child's school has a one week bridge program in mid August.

Sports try outs, and sometimes summer workouts.

We're talking about incoming high school freshmen; 13-14 year olds. I went to public school and knew no one who had a job (outside of maybe casual lawn mowing or babysitting) the summer after eighth grade.

Maybe a group playdate in May and/or the weekend before school starts, but I wouldn't expect a lot.
