Would you trade Hyde for Janney?!

Got a spot at Janney. Very happy with Hyde. Any reason to trade?

Is Hyde your IB school? I don't know why you would choose a longer commute when you are happy.

I personally would not switch if you’re happy there and the commute is good for you (including the commute to Hardy and MacArthur eventually). But it depends on what you want in a school environment and the commute factor.

Hyde is smaller and more diverse and I feel like the community is stronger (biased because it’s our #1 - we are waitlisted for a second grade spot). It’s a very good school! Janney is also a good school but has a reputation for being larger and more crowded.

Feeder patterns are also very different. Hyde feeds to Hardy and MacArthur, both also smaller and less crowded (for now). Janney feeds to Deal and Jackson-Reed, both larger but maybe more opportunities at J-R for sports, extracurriculars, and the J-R “academies.” All three schools (Janney Deal J-R) are way easier to get to by metro though so you could send your kid on their own sooner (assuming you’re driving them now).

I agree with others that I would not switch if Hyde is your inbound and you are happy. We love Janney though! Happy to answer any specific questions if that would help you compare options

We are OOB for both and commute would be similar.

is Jekyll an option?

If you are OOB for both, I would not discount how much the proximity of Janney/deal/JR to the metro will help with logistics as your kids get older. I’d also feel more comfortable about that feeder path, although things could obviously change.

Yeah I commented above because I love Hyde and I'm coming from Navy Yard, so any deeper into Wards 2 or 3 is just not going to happen for us unless we move (give me a sub 5% mortgage and I think we will do that eventually).

If your commute would be similar now, you can get relief from it sooner if you end up Deal-Jackson Reed because of all the bus and metro connections adjacent.

I had kids at both, and I would stick with Hyde. janney fine but not worth uprooting for. And Hyde is really special.

How many times have you changed school? You should have that in mine. I have a friend at Hyde that has moved her kids 3 times already and kids are not happy about it.

Agree with this. I lotteried my kids for what turned out to be a very lateral move. I’d love to move them back to our neighborhood school but moving them again would just be too much moving.

It's hard to be OOB at Janney since the school is very neighborhood based. I would not switch.

Hyde has a sizable contingent of dedicated OOB families. Its part of the culture. We are in-bounds and our kid has school friends in the neighborhood, but we also still get together with OOB kids on the weekend for park meetups, birthdays, etc. It's not a problem at all, people are very cool about it.

I can't speak for Janney, but I have a suspicion it will be easier to find your people at H-A. I vote to stay.

Janney is so heavily neighborhood based. Very few OOB students. Obviously nothing is that far but the vast majority of families walk to school in the morning and it's very much part of the culture there.

yes. Agree with this. You can feel on the outs even if you live on the further reaches of the neighborhood and have to drive vs. walk. People are not mean or exclusionary (lest anyone jump there) but it's just such a neighborhood based school. If you're out-of-bounds kids will come to your parties and playdates but it's definitely a rough go socially simply because everyone else is packed into one square mile and see each other daily (share backyards, etc). This is especially true later on (4th grade and up) when kids start to walk home independently.
