W&M - Study abroad

I am sorry if this question was asked before. Any experience with W&M Study abroad? They say 55% of kids go through the study abroad program. That's a lot.

Are you referring to the waitlisted kids who opt for fall study abroad to get guaranteed spring admit? Or just the study abroad program in general. I know that international relations is one of their strongest programs so it would make sense for a lot of William and Mary students to do study abroad.

No, not the waitlisted ones. The ones who get accepted and then go through the study abroad program.

DD is using a third-party vendor for her abroad semester in fall in Japan.

She has found the offered resources of the Reeves Center to be very good, but the student has to seek them out. With Japan there were less resources and W&M led programs than going to France or Spain for example. She has gotten with her Prof in the department who was more than happy to share information and past experiences of what fulfilled credits for courses taken abroad and how it fits into completing the major requirements.

Some popular W&M programs can be competitive though because so many students participate. For Japan that would be Keio University in Tokyo.

As a Soph she already knows kids that went abroad last winter break and quite a few more for this summer. The kids are from all kinds of majors, STEM, Data science, Psychology, etc. So, it not only the IR kids.

They can’t wait to get out of Williamsburg lol (had to do it considering the other thread)

W&M has a lot of international relations majors and a lot of people who do a minor in an area study (where you take courses about culture/history of an area/diaspora in the target language) so study abroad is almost a given for these folks. My kid was there during the Covid era so didn't do a traditional study abroad, but was supported to work abroad in the summer on a research grant. It was a great experience.

Mine is an IR/language area study double major. Going abroad through a WM program in their language department this summer. I wish it was a semester, but it doesn’t work if she want to get the double major and graduate on time. Current sophomore, and she may have the option to intern abroad next summer. I do believe the 55% number is true, but there are a lot a WM sponsored summer programs, so they woUld be included

It's a single course, not a semester, so usually done over summer or winter break. It's a way to avoid going home not Williamsburg.

I studied abroad at W&M for a semester during my sophomore year. I was an English and Government/International Relations double major so I would estimate about half of those in the International Relations concentration studied abroad for a semester. Over freshman year summer, I also did a summer program through W&M in England - I think I earned something like 4-6 graded credits over the summer.

For my semester abroad, I intentionally did NOT go through W&M and went through a third-party company for two reasons: it was cheaper than a semester of W&M tuition, and I transferred credits rather than grades back to W&M. W&M's program would transfer grades directly back, and my wish was to enjoy my semester abroad rather than being concerned about studying every evening to keep my GPA up. I was studying in Spain; I had taken Spanish in high school, but was not majoring in it in college, and some of my classes were taught in Spanish. I wanted to take those classes to improve my Spanish, but did not do as well in them as classes taught in English, for obvious reasons, so would have felt a lot more stress if I knew those grades would impact my GPA.

My DC studied abroad through SIT. https://studyabroad.sit.edu/ and had a great experience. She found it through the WM study abroad office - they were very helpful. When she was deciding what to do, she was able to talk to older students about the programs they had done.

She also did a separate summer abroad program through the Reeves Center for which she received class credit. Look through their website and you can see how active WM is in international studies

You obviously don't have to study abroad. It is a popular choice at W&M and there are many options.

My dc 24 is deciding between this and several other fall acceptances. It’s a tough choice. They were not planning on studying abroad and feeling socially behind are what worries them. Also, while WM was the best ranked school that accepted them, they aren’t totally sold on the place and are leaning toward a more rah rah sports university.

Students don't all do study abroad at the same time. Lots of summer and break intensive programs. So it's not like your junior cohort disappears in the spring all at once or anything.

I think PP was referring to the spring admit program, which is different.
