Nice way to landscape property line

Hello! I live in a suburban community, and my house is an end unit. I have a decent side yard next to a public space that is somewhat grassy and wooded, and I have seen people wander in and out of there for various leisurely activities. I have seen children forage for wild berries and people walk their dogs through the woods. Occasionally, people will wander into my property. Once, I saw someone who sat and read under a tree I planted on my property. I don't think it's out of ill intent. I just don't think they realize it is my space.

I have a fence for my backyard to keep my dog in, but my front yard does not have a fence. What is a nice subtle way to remind people where my property begins besides something obvious like putting up a fence or planting a long row of evergreen shrubs? I'd like to start a flower or edible garden there so I want to avoid taking up space with hedges, but I am also worried that if I don't, some people might mistakingly "forage" through some of my plants.

Put up a sign that says "Private Property".

Fences don't take up that much room.

Very true, but I just don't like the aesthetic of having a fence towards the front of the house. I am trying to save that option as a last resort.

Plant something spiky.

OP: You may need to rethink your aversion to erecting a fence in your front-yard as a good fence is almost certainly your best option.

We planted a row of pampas grass. It's attractive - stays year round (you can prune it down in spring) and blocks people from crossing the line. We have not had one person pass into our yard.

I’ve seen a row of hostas. I’ve also seen a row of large rocks. A hedge of roses could be nice if you get sun although there are a ton of part shade tolerant roses.
