Physical therapist for chronic back pain

Anonymous
I have had a herniated disc and sciatica for a couple of months now. I have been going to a large place in Chevy Chase MD for physical therapy but it has only made things worse. The place is a bit of a factory -see a different person each time, and they don’t really seem interested in getting to the root of the problem.

Can anyone recommend a physical therapist (or dr) in the bethesda/Chevy Chase/NW DC area who might actually spend some time working with me to try to fix the issue. I don’t mind if it costs a lot, I just want to reduce the pain…

Thanks!

Nope. Sadly, I cannot. And I've been to nearly all of them, no exaggeration. You will be shuffled between providers, rushed through visits, given the standard fluff and fold, and your billing will probably get goofed up.

That industry is a cesspool. Best of luck to you.

Kaye at Fyzical in Spring Valley helped me with this (both before and after surgery). And I’m sorry about the sciatica. It’s the worst.

Forever fit for good 1-1 care that doesn’t feel like a factory and takes insurance.

I've had great experiences at Point Performance in Bethesda. You're assigned a primary PT for the duration of your treatment. I, DH, and DS15 all had quick recoveries from minor injuries and learned a lot of exercises we can continue at home.

Best PTs ever. They are very smart and highly trained. I pay $220 for each session. We get no reimbursement but when I went to PT at Centers for Advanced Orthopedics in Chevy Chase, there was zero improvement. They just have you do exercises on your own and you see the PT for 4-7 minutes. I didn’t see the point since they didn’t really even watch you do the exercises either. Very nice people and if you just want exercises to do, it’s fine.

If it’s a tricky case, I’d go to Bethesda Physiocare.

Go see a neurosurgeon. Some problems are structural and simply cannot be fixed by PT. I recommend Dr. Vinay Deshmukh at Medstar.

OP here. Funny you should mention that, but I just saw my Orthopedist and he said at this stage I am wasting my time with PT. I have a significant herniated disc, it hasn’t healed in 10 weeks with PT, it is causing very serious pain, and I should just schedule a microdiscectomy…

I wonder if he is right and I should just schedule the surgery so I can try to get on with my life?

Yes! This was me last year and the surgery was life changing. It’s scary to think of back surgery but it’s been totally worth it to be free of the awful pain.

Thanks! I have just scheduled. I hope the recovery isn’t to brutal…
