We are thinking of refinishing and changing the color of our current Brazillian cherry flooring before putting our house on the market. I see lots of light color floors in listings but that requires bleaching and a ton of work, which we are willing to do. However, we could also apply a dark stain that would eliminate the red, (the goal), and would add a sophisticated look.
What do you think we should do? |
| Leave it. (Unless it's in poor condition.) Aren't you selling the property? This from a person who appreciates all wood finishes. |
| I hate cherry floors anything lighter will be better. |
| I would leave it, Brazilian cherry becomes redder over time and it’s almost impossible to lighten it such they the red doesn’t show (it’s not going to look like European oak if sanded down). Dark wood floors show dust and are harder to maintain . |

| Agree with everyone that says to leave it - let the new owners refinish the floors to their taste. It'll be a lot easier for them to do it when the house is vacant anyway. |
|
Leave it is wise.
I've watched online as my grandma's house has been redone twice. They put greyish bleached vinyl plank over "too red" good quality narrow plank oak from the 60s. That was fairly pristine from being under carpet for a long time. Both extra dark and bleached floors are too trendy. Let the next person have what they want. It wastes your money to guess. |
| Why are you asking random strangers this question when you have no idea if they have taste? |
This. I love our golden oak floors the previous home owners left,.which seem to be unpopular now. It's better to leave high quality wooden floors as they are and let new homeowners install cheap vinyl over them if they want gray or light floors. |
Same. I love mine too. |
|
Leave it. The owners would rather pick what they do.
We did ours dark dark a few years ago and they look great….if they are freshly vacuumed and mopped. They are a massive massive pain to keep nice and I am a super OCD housekeeper. If I had a redo I’d do them bleached and light. |
| This is real estate. Move the post to the other forum. |
| If the floors are generally in good condition, leave them and spend the money on fresh paint instead. Way cheaper and fresh clean paint will impress buyers more than brand new floors that may or may not be to their taste. |
| We have ash throughout with a Swedish matte finish. Grain is prettier than oak as it's more subtle. |
| Are you updating cabinets too? If yes, makes sense to make everything more up to date. If not, leave it. |
