Tips for dealing with injury

Anonymous
My son is a pitcher and injured his shoulder pitching this week. We haven’t gotten in to the specialist yet but from what we gather this is not entirely season ending, but it is going to be weeks of recovery in the middle of a very short season. He may make it back for playoffs.

His team is going to get pounded without him in the rotation and he is going to miss baseball terribly. He looks forward to his high school season all year long - it the highlight of his year. And he is a junior and talking to college coaches, who are going to be wary of recruiting a kid with a shoulder injury.

So, he’s really sad. Any tips for helping a kid through a serious but not career ending injury? For today we are going for junk food and movies, but eventually I’d like to be able to offer more than simple carbs and escapism.

Be honest with coaches. Give your recovery plan.

Do all the training and PT that's allowed.

Hopefully you have video that you can still send from recent events.

Thanks. Yes, he’ll do all the training and PT. He may even be able to do more strength training for lower body and core than he would have during the season. He has enough video, but coaches do want recent. He’ll have to let coaches know who wanted to come see him play that it won’t be for the next month, at least. It’s just so depressing for him! And it makes me sad and anxious too, which I am doing my best to hide from him because he doesn’t need my emotions on top of his own, for sure.
