My DD25 is narrowing down her list of colleges. Her dream school is UNC and as and OOS student she knows her odds are extremely small. She is a strong student but maybe pretty average by today's standards - 4.3 WGPA, all AP/DE coursework, involved in sports and community service, etc. Based on early testing I would predict her SAT to be somewhere in the 1400's. What schools would offer a similar feel and student body that might be good targets for her? |
What aspects does she like about UNC?
My immediate thought is UVA and UGA. |
What state are you in? What major? |
Does your DD's school use either Naviance or Scoir? If yes, there is a feature for cross applications where you can see where students from your high school applied (and got into).
I just went through this process with my DS who had a slightly lower GPA and a higher SAT. I would recommend looking at Wisconsin, Penn State and Indiana as schools that might have a similar feel to UNC but a place where her stats fall within the cohort of accepted students. |
what is instate to you? My DD also loved UNC but knew it was out of reach OOS (no one from our HS had ever gotten in in its 14 years of existence). She attends UVA in state. Similar stats though her end of junior year GPA was around 4.36. She ended HS with a 4.44. |
UGA is UNC but with better football. |
UNC is UVA with fewer Rhodes Scholars |
We are in Ohio, and UVA would be just as difficult if not more difficult for her than UNC.
She liked the academics, school spirit, medium to large enrollment size, campus and surrounding areas and the vibe of the student body - it feels like greek life is there if you want it, but school isn't dominated by it if you don't. Really, she just loved everything other than how difficult it is to get in! |
Larger publics: Clemson UGA GA Tech Smaller Privates: Elon Richmond Wake |
What about college of Charleston? |
How about Virginia Tech? They aren’t an exact match but do have some similar aspects and check a lot of the same boxes. |
Does she want to be in NC? |
Wisconsin Possibly Virginia Tech |
No, not set on being in NC, but she does like the warmer weather. I have heard a lot about Clemson and VT, particularly about how friendly the students are. Not sure if there is any truth to that? |
For Privates
Boston College has a little bit of UNC CH vibe but in a colder climate, more compact campus. You would have to go TO and ED. Umiami is more vibrant more diverse than UNC CH with palm trees and sunshine with similar calibre student. Probably need to do ED II, but test scores would be on the money. Villanova is an easier admit relative to UNC OOS. I think the campus is a little more remote and boring due to distance from Philly. Smaller student population than UNC but similar demographics. |
