Budget- CE recommended budget $55.7M less

Anonymous
The County Executives budget recommendation for MCPS is $55.7M less than requested.

Doesn’t even cover $25M needed for inflation, staff for new space, etc.

More cuts are coming…

And then people wonder why there won't be auditoriums ready, why we don't have compensation enough to attract paras, etc.

Around 1:08, Seth Adams explains that a budget plan with the most traction involves removing expenditures to renovate Wootton, Magruder, Damascus, and Eastern from the CIP altogether.

^^^The most traction in the sense that county council members preferred this bad option to the other bad option.

They seriously need to do cuts. Lots of options. Start with the money they give to the nonprofits that don’t directly help mcps, stop fighting special ed placements and cut central office. And, why did the boe need new offices with new furniture and all that. Their spending is out of control as is the counties. Both need huge cuts.

The para, bus driver and other lower level staff pay is applauding.

I feel like I must be missing something and I'm hoping someone can give me some reassurance.

A few weeks ago, I saw current Wootton parents and students give testimonials about the extent of water intrusion and mold in the building:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joW7ciWyp6g

Since then, I haven't seen or heard any dispute of the severity of these issues.

Can anyone share what steps MCPS takes to ensure students are not being exposed to environmental hazards in their facilities? Do they MCPS regularly test its facilities for mold? Does anyone have information about what the repair process is for the issues that are depicted in the students' pictures from that hearing?

https://www.cdc.gov/mold/faqs.htm

I'm shocked and kind of horrified to see these conditions and I don't see how letting them continue is on the table.

I could not connect the options Mr. Adams was discussing with the auditorium issue. Are the Crown and Woodward auditoriums still delayed?

Also, Wootton needs to lobby the County Council. The previous advocacy worked for the School Board, but the County Council is making the cuts.

Yes, but nothing with the budget is finalized until May/June. Still time to lobby the county executive and council.

MCPS central staff are extremely incompetent. Nobody trusts them and throwing money into a poorly managed system is a fools' errand.

I hope they do.

In the board testimonial above, a parent shared how their children with autoimmune conditions were forced to miss most school days because mold would cause their conditions to flare up.

Per the CDC:

"Immune-compromised people and people with chronic lung disease may get infections in their lungs from mold."

https://www.cdc.gov/mold/default.htm

The County Council recommended these cuts (which are currently on track to remove Wootton's renovation from the CIP) in the same month that they recognized Autoimmune Awareness Month:

It's a nice picture though.

That money wouldn't go to Wootton, it would go to paying off incompetent employees to go away quietly and pay for mismanagement of health insurance funds

The CE is proposing increasing MCPS's budget by $128 million, instead of $188 million.
