Advises needed for AAP

Anonymous
Hi folks,
I have 5th grade boy and 2nd grade girl in arlington, moving/rent into fairfax (more like mclean) during the summer and would hope to get into the AAP. I heard center school like haycock is super difficult to get in. Any tips to boost their chance to get in AAP coming fall?
If my son does not get in, can he apply again at 7th grade in middle school? or no big deal at his age?
Thanks a lot!

I'm assuming from your post that you have not already applied for this cycle. In that case, you'll need to apply as a new FCPS student in the Fall for Spring placement. This year the Fall deadline was Oct 15 - next year should be similar.

Here's a link that will take you to the deadlines and forms. Reaching out to the AART at the school will be helpful.

Good luck!

You can apply for AAP every year, but it's really not a big deal in middle school because honors courses are fairly close to the same thing.

No big deal.

Your student will be fine. Haycock teaches level IV for All Science and social studies curriculum. Having had one kid in the program and one not, the general classes for english also incorporate many of the same projects and Level iV curriculum like Jacobs Ladder, Socratic Seminar, etc. Math is the one subject that is different. They have a few different levels of math that your son could test into. Even within the Level IV math, classes have different levels. Once you get to Longfellow MS it really does not matter. All classes are Honors. The APP classes are still separated. My child has friends in both programs and they all work on assignments together for the most part. Many of the same projects and studying together.

New students that register in the summer can apply for immediate entry into AAP. You don't have to wait until the Fall deadline. Contact the AAP office when you register.
