Just yesterday my almost 8-year-old girl expressed an interest in playing soccer. She’s never played any team sports before and it looks like we missed the registration for Takoma where are most of the kids in our neighborhood play. I know nothing about soccer and I have no idea where to look next. Anything else open that’s near Silver Spring or she could start as a total beginner?

Takoma is just getting started. It's definitely worth an email to see if they have an available spot! That's a perfect place for beginners - a focus on fun and development.
Try MSI recreational. You can at least get on the waitlist for next season.
If Takoma doesn’t have any spots, it might be worth reaching out to HMB, which is the Hyattsville league. We are in university park and play in the same league, and I can say confidently that it’s the right place for a beginner.
Takoma is incredibly laid-back. They will likely make space for her.
MSI Rec
Any rec leave will be fine. You may have missed the spring registration though. Maybe do a week of soccer camp over the summer and see if she likes it. Some are half day because of the heat so I would recommend those if you can do that. Over the summer sign ups will start for fall.
MSI has a spring break camp with half day and full day options. Could help to gauge how interested she really is.
Find your local rec league. It's probably too late for spring soccer, so she'll have to wait until the fall.
Looks like MSI spring registration may still be open
Also, see if any of her classmates or neighborhood fiends play and try to get her on their team, having a friend will help a lot!
Thanks this is really helpful!
MSI rec is a great place to start! And they have openings at that age right now (you may not get on your “home” team but they’ll place you somewhere close). Both my DDs played/play MSI rec and we’ve had great experiences. Do NOT start paying travel club rates until you’re sure she really does love AND that she has the skill to make a first team.
google local clubs in your area and sign her up for a team.
