Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)
| Does MCPS offer Algebra 1 in high school? If not, what’s the pathway for kids that take 8th grade math? |

This is from Poolesville HS, but this pathway should be available at most MCPS high schools. |
| Thank you! |
| All MCPS schools offer Algebra I in high school. It is basically remedial math. |
| This is so crazy. I took Algebra I as a freshman (as most did), never hit calculus, and was still admitted to and graduated from a top engineering program. When did this change? |
A lot has changed now. It’s a stem world! |
How old are your kids? You're in for a shock. No one except community-college-bound students take Algebra 1 in high school these days. To get into a good engineering program, kids need at least AP Calc BC, if not multivariable calculus. My son's friend last year got into Dartmouth and had taken a year of Calculus 3 at UMD in 12th grade. |
Yes, I'm aware. I have a senior who was admitted to a selective engineering program and two younger ones who are on track to take BC. Just curious when this changed! |
Sure. But like I said, I graduated from a top engineering program. It was a STEM world for me back then, but calc in high school wasn't the norm. |
It’s not everyone’s kid. Mine will be in Algebra 1 next year. He’s not a math person. Recommended for honors in everything else but not that. I sure hope it’s remedial! He needs it. Not everyone can or should be an engineer. |
| My DD is taking Algebra 1 Honors in 7th grade at FCPS. Many of her classmates will have taken it before entering HS. |
It is not remedial math. |
Doing Algebra I in 8th grade is considered on-level for MCPS. At many (most) MCPS schools the advanced kids will come into HS taking Algebra II in 9th (or even higher for a small percentage). While the content for 9th grade Algebra I is not remedial, the reality is, most of the students who are taking it are considered "behind" and not the best students. |
They could be "the best students" in areas like writing, languages, fine and performing arts, or media, and rather than being "behind" be prioritizing what matters for them and _their_ careers. "The best" students don't all go into STEM, nor should they. |
This is a rude and uncalled for comment. There is no need for you to pass judgement on this question. |
