High school head coach resigning - how does this impact things?

Anonymous
Anyone experience a head coach resigning from a high school? Were they able to get a new coach?

DeMatha's head coach resigned as both head coach and director of the club soccer program. According to the email that was sent out, no information was given regarding who would take over.
I'm assuming the club program will fold if they can't hire someone, but for the high school, I'm wondering how easy it is to hire high school soccer coaches?

Don’t they have until the fall to find someone? I’d think they have plenty of time.

His assistant coach Parnell seems to be the likely successor. That would make the most sense but I’m just speculating.

Nope, anyone coaching position that has ever been vacated by the coach has never been filled. Most teams in the area are just player-coached as a result.

This just isn't any job. It's Dematha.

I am guessing that is sarcasm - coaches come and go all the time

OP here - I should have been more specific. I don't mean if they were able to replace the head coach with an adult to chaperone the kids.

Were they able to replace the head coach with someone qualified to be a head coach and program director? And were there negative impacts to the program when a head coach leaves without a successor in place?

Maybe. He dropped most of his club teams last fall and went to coach at Bethesda. That could mean good things for the high school if he's going to step in, but not good things for the club program.

Doubt there will be much helpful info. DeMatha is DeMatha, HS soccer generally isn't taken seriously as some WCAC programs.

The club program was never very competitive so it’s a huge loss for the neighborhood, particularly as to the girls programs. But there are other boys clubs nearby.

That may be true at DeMatha but WCAC soccer, including DeMatha is pretty competitive.

GOD-- I WISH our HS soccer coaches would resign. Alas, they are dug in deep there for decades.

There's a lot of parents that agree with you. But i'm not sure that would change the way the kids play.

The head coach at Potomac resigned after this year. They went to states and won their division for past two years He had been the head coach for like 25 years. Yet to be seen whether Potomac can hire somebody who gets similar results…they started recruiting 5 months ago but no announcement yet. There is lots of talent in this area though..
