Non stimulant for hyperactivity

Anonymous
Looking to see if there are any medications that work for major hyperactivity, impulse control, and focus that are non stimulant. Has anyone had success with a non stimulant? Our child just doesn’t gain weight anymore regardless of how much he eats. Thanks

Guanfacine helped my child with hyperactivity. It didn't help with focus, so for us wasn't a replacement for a stimulant.

Op here, we did try that and got the same results.

We’re in a similar boat. We’re still tinkering with Guanfacine which was suggested for this purpose. There is also clonidine.

Our previous doctor had also suggested qelbree and strattera in the past. We tried qelbree, which had side effects we couldn’t get past, and haven’t tried strattera yet.

Lastly there is Abilify, which is a powerful drug. I would exhaust all other options before exploring Abilify.

Not gaining weight isn't the worst thing and I wouldn't stop an otherwise successful med just for that. My daughter didn't gain any weight from 6th-9th grade, but she was growing. She's now 17, taller than I am (and according to x-rays, still growing), and a healthy weight.

My son is on Adderall and had no appetite so the doctor added an appetite stimulant, which has helped a lot!

It's this -- Cyproheptadine
