Parent Shadow Days

Anonymous
I’m a veteran teacher (18 years this year) but new to MCPS. Is parent shadowing universal at all MCPS middle schools? We were told last Friday parents basically can pick 6 days in (3 in March and 3 in April) to come shadow their kid. I’ve never heard of this in my entire teaching career. It seems like such a waste of real instructional time and completely disruptive. I understand the Open House in October, but this seems excessive and quite frankly, ludicrous.

As a teacher, I love it! Just continue with normal instruction? I've had parents shadow when students couldn't get it together and it made a difference because they didn't want it to happen again.

I have never heard of this outside the open house (which also seems like a waste of time).

That’s a little different than having 6 available days where any parent of any student can just voluntarily show up. It’s fine for students who can’t get it together or if a parent is concerned, but this is basically 6 days of Open House.

I've never heard of this, but I'd love to be able to do it - except that it would _really_ bother my kid. Probably better for DC that I should volunteer in various ways and places as I can.

Never heard of this. I have one kid in HS and another in MS.

My kids are in college but it existed for us. We stopped going after maybe 6th grade as the kids did not want us to come. I think DD really loved a hs teacher and wanted us to meet her so we went just to that class

Parents at the middle level don’t even come to open house. Their kids would be mortified haha. I have never heard of this and I’ve taught in multiple middle schools. Plus had a kid in another one.
