That's because it would go through the country club's golf course-- can't have that can we? |
It is not just the country club who opposes it. That is an easy target. People who bike and walk on the trail every day oppose it. Who wants to bike next to a empty commuter train? Families whose homes back up to the proposed line and don't want the noise oppose it. People who oppose wasteful government spending oppose it. Imagine how far this money could go if it was used for Maryland schools, which have all had budget cuts. |
His name is Ehrlich. And I say right on!! I say this as a rabid liberal Dem who has never voted Republican. I will be voting for Bob in the fall. Otherwise, my commuter artery will be gone forever since I walk and bike to work by trail. Don't let O'Malley fool you: there is no room for two trains plus a bike path. Those pictures in their study? Notice how they have pictures of mature trees in there? Isn't it amazing how they want people to believe that 200 year old original forest trees will grow up quickly? And no, I'm not a member of Columbia Country Club, never have been and never will be.
Other objections I have to the Purple Line: I think light rail is dangerous in such a highly residential area. It's not if somebody will get killed, it's how soon. Furthermore, it will trade one traffic problem for another. Right now there is a huge backup along Jones Mill Road in the AM. It will only get worse with that stupid light rail coming through. Once it's built, who maintains it? Did you notice how 9 people were killed a year ago on the Red Line? We need to take care of the system that already exists. Last, but by no means least, is that fact that we really can't afford this boondoggle. It's a gift to the Chevy Chase Land Co. because they're funding the politicians. I'm not just voting for Bob, I'm going to start contributing to his campaign. GO BOB EHRLICH!!!!!!!!! |
"Not to be a republican at twenty is proof of want of heart; to be one at thirty is proof of want of head." Francois Guisot |
Oh please. If this gets killed the money will be used to add another lane to the ICC. And I have no doubt whatsoever it'll get killed eventually. It's one of the reasons I bought a house in the city--"shorting" the 'burbs is the best financial decision I've ever made. You can always expect suburban voters to do the wrong thing in the long-run; that's why they'll eventually strangle themselves with cancerous growth and piss-poor planning. |
Those families, or at lease the half of them that have purchased their homes since there has been a trail and not a CSX freight rail line along that route, knew all along that the purpose of the rail line purchase was for the trail AND possible passenger rail in the future. They have enjoyed the benefits of the trail for years while this has been disputed, I do not feel sorry for them for facing the music now. I was hoping for a Metro-style underground purple line, but the money is just not there for it. There needs to be something connecting the two ends of the red line and people will not ride the "high-speed" buses that were proposed to run along Jones Bridge Road. No one is going to take Metro, transfer to a bus, then take Metro again from Medical Center into Bethesda. |
Exactly, well said, I spoke with a candidate for state delegate last night, I asked what she thought of the Purple Line and I totally caught her off guard. I asked what is the purpose of the Purple Line was. She said to eliminate the traffic along EW Hwy- Look at the traffic that builds up there each day; it is people like all of us taking our kids from school to other events, People who use EW Hwy to get to Rock Creek Parkway, Connecticut Avenue, the Beltway with our kids. To eliminate the traffic, all the people like us, would need to put our kids on the Purple line and then get on the bus to get to ballet, soccer, etc. The Ridership is based on assumptions, not hard core numbers. How many people were asked if the Purple line was built, would you use it? Now the numbers $60,000,000 to build a second entrance to the Bethesda Metro, $60,000,000!! Seriously not worth it. That is just for a new entrance by the movie theaters. Imagine the impact that would have if we put that $60,000,000 towards education, building better streets, making a more efficient use of other programs in the County, or building a line in the middle of 270 that people would actually use. Look at the NE corridor and Chicago, towns have a train station, that people park at and take a main line into the city. The stop is centrally located so people can drive the 5-15 minute spark get on the train and be done with it. If you put a line from Germantown to Metro Center, you will get more people using it and taking traffic off 270. The line to Dulles will be a huge success because it is going to be centrally located. Easy in easy out. |
I detest the American brand of faux Conservativism as much as the next person, but given that Guisot was living in 19th century France, my guess is that his use of the word "republican" would be a bit different from the modern US context. ![]() |

You really hit the nail on the head. CCLCO is just waiting to redevelope the entire area where TW Perry and the other shos there. Sure the put a huge amount of money to refurbish the bridge and make it so it will support a rail system. Gavin Farr handed the company to David Smith who has no idea what he is doing. CCLCO owns so much of Chev Chase and generate so much tax revenue that polticians will jump when they say so. They stand to be the only ones to gain so much from a Purple line. |
I love how the NIMBY pp thinks that more people will walk or bike on the bike path than will ride on light rail. That's really rich. |
"I, too, like the leaders of Germany, had grave doubts about democracy. ... It suddenly dawned on me, somewhat to my surprise, that the whole body of doctrine that I had been preaching was fundamentally anti-Anglo Saxon, and that if I had any spiritual home at all it must be in the land of my ancestors. When World War I actually started I began forthwith to whoop for the Kaiser, and I kept up that whooping so long as there was any free speech left." Also HL Mencken |
I know they will because I do it. Tons of people commute that way. Moreover, I wouldn't define myself as NIMBY since my house is not on the trail. Those light rail tin cans are a joke. |
Wait... I can't remember. Were the Germans the Bad Guys during WWI? I know they had the pointy helmets. They were the Bad Guys, right? Damn Mencken and his kraut-lovin' soul! |
