Prince George’s County Police say the number of juveniles being robbed as they walk to and from school is a serious problem the county right now.

Taking action, the Ardmore Springdale Association is starting a "Community Power Hour" in the neighborhoods around Charles H. Flowers High School, a county school police say saw two incidents targeting students last month.

Prince George’s County Council Chair Jolene Ivey tells FOX 5 she is participating with the association, handing out flyers about "Community Power Hour" effort from 2-3 p.m. Monday, March 11.

The effort is calling on neighbors who have outdoor things to do, like walk their dog or mow the lawn, to purposefully do so between 2-3 p.m. on weekdays.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. This is such an insufficient response to a highly traumatic, urgent, terrifying problem.

As always, the children speak truth to power:

"I don’t know that I it would make much of a difference ‘cause like [people] still steal in broad daylight," said another student off camera.

Pretty much.

I don't know. My self-propelled mower is pretty scary.

Clearly, the thing causing an increase in robberies is a lack of neighbors being outside.

I think this is a good idea. The biggest breakdown in the US is lack of community. We have frayed connections and a loneliness vacuum being filled for adolescents by tik tok. That's where they are getting their "values". She should call on people to go back to houses of worship. Come out to potlucks and trash pick up days etc. I would also have a safe passage for these kids with higher police presence, but asking for community to help out shouldn't be derided.

The kids who are doing the robbing aren't suffering from a loneliness vacuum. They have much deeper issues going on at home, unfortunately.

The only thing that kept me from a life of crime was my neighbors relentless lead blowing during school hours. I had to go to school to get away from the noise.

Something tells me that the criminals committing an armed robbery for a HS student’s iPhone or sneakers or whatever, aren’t going to be intimidated by a senior citizen neighbor standing outside with their leaf blower. You could have 50 witnesses to a crime and providing accurate descriptions to police but the victim isn’t going to get their phone back and will probably also have all their accounts drained in a matter of minutes.

I actually have a theory that the breakdown of social structures and isolation on devices and kids raising each other does lead to youth pathology.

Students don't need fancy iPhones or expensive sneakers. Problem solved.

While I 100% agree with you and your premise, this volunteer, long-term community initiative is an inadequate response to an acute, urgent problem.

I hear you. Need more than one prong to the response. I wouldn't trash her idea - just ask where's the rest I guess?

Ok so then they just get assaulted and beat up but not robbed. Guess that’s better?

The Ivy family has way too much power in PG politics. Her son is a prime example of nepotism and is completely unqualified for his job. They sent out a terrible letter a few years ago supporting a mayoral candidate in Cheverly, I think that it swayed the election because people were so disgusted.
