I really REALLY love the name SOFIA, but I heard it is not a good idea since it is a common name. What is your opinion?

I am originally from Europe, so I would like a name that is international and not too American.. Thanks!

Gorgeous name. DD is Josefa.

My DS goes to the German School--of the 20 kids in his class, there are 4 Sofias (or variations of). It's a really nice name, but I believe it is quite common. Just something to be aware of if that bothers you.

It's very common. I think I know 4 Sofias between 1 -3 yrs old.

I adore that name! Although I think the more common American spelling is Sophia. I would *think* that is a very popular name right now considering Olivia, Hannah and other girl names of that sort are popular - but I honestly don't know a single Sophia personally. My kids are 9 & 7 though - so it could be more popular with the younger set. I also adore Claire - same era - if you're still considering options I used to know an old lady across the street named Phaedra - which is old fashioned but completely uncommon (pronounced Fae-dra). I think that's pretty too.

Sofia is lovely, but as you say, it and Sophia are really popular. (Sofia is #36 and Sophia is #4.)

Where are you from originally? What other names are you considering?

Beautiful, and very common, even with that spelling. And when you add in the Sophie/Sofies...but that doesn't bother some people, wouldn't bother me as long as it's a pretty name, and Sofia is.

I was reading Proust and came across Phédre -- love that name too -- but DH already vetoed it now and forever.

Phedre? How pretentious. Not only is it an awful name but the way you brought it up makes me want to puke.

mom of a sophia here and it bothers me that it's so popular. DD is 4 which is right around when it became popular. I would change her name if I could.

OP, how about Nadia or Nesrine? Katja and Katerina are also pretty. Or else Lisaveta or other european variants on common names...
