| DS is wrapping up his senior year, and as the person who spent the most time working with him on his applications I am amazed at how challenging it was even with a well-educated, highly involved parent helping out. I would love to volunteer with an org that matches you with a high schooler to help with the process - can anyone recommend a local org? |

It's not necessarily local, but you can participate from anywhere. I heard about this on the Your College Bound Kid podcast and am thinking about also doing it when I get my youngest through the process.

Great idea! I am starting to move into college counseling because of my experience with my kids and a few others. I am planning to donate time to my kid's HS counseling office for Questbridge applicants or FARMs students if I can.
Thanks to PP for sharing that other link. |
Thanks! I had also heard about Scholar Match, but from what I’ve read / heard, they strongly prefer volunteers in California / with a strong knowledge of CA higher education. To answer the other question. I’m in DC |
| College counselor here. I highly recommend you support students through a formal organization, whether through a high school's counseling office or through Scholar Match. Liability issues and the importance of creating a college list based on a family's particular financial circumstances means that unintentionally you can do more harm than good without support and training. |

In Arlington, AHC (low income housing) has a College and Career Readiness program that uses volunteers to help juniors -seniors with college search and applications

I’m trying to! That’s why I’m asking about organizations. |
Your College-Bound Kid recently interviewed two people from Scholar Match for You. I believe they have expanded and are no longer just looking for California students/volunteers: https://yourcollegeboundkid.com/2024/02/22/interview-172-nora-rosales-and-hannah-takasuka-on-opportunities-to-be-a-college-coach-with-scholarmatch/ |
That was a terrible interview |
