Porsche Cayman GTS or BMW M3?

Cayman GTS 4.0 is the easy choice for me. In my opinion BMW abandoned their heritage with the G80 generation, instead of iterating on classic looks, they went with the kidney grill and an interior more focused on technology than the driving experience. Seriously, it's like the same tasteless screen that's in every Mustang now.

The GTS 4.0 just has more character. The 4.0 sounds amazing and the interior is simple and driver focused. I believe the Cayman 4.0 cars will preserve value better in the long run as well. Granted

But honestly, go for the car that you vibe with the most. It's kind of an apples to oranges comparison though. One is a lightweight, mid-engined sports coupe weighing in a little under 3200 lbs. The other is basically a luxury German muscle sedan weighing closer to 4000 lbs.

GTS by far.

Cayman GTS. It's more of a sports car by far.

BMW is great on paper in terms of specs, but Cayman is a better drive. I have friends with both.

In terms of absolute brutal acceleration, it’s impossible to beat without spending perhaps an additional million dollars or more.

In any part of the driving experience other than going from a standing stop to 200 mph in a straight line - the Porsche, all day long.

BMW doesn’t merit consideration any more. They are utterly soulless now.

That's a bit harsh, but the last great M car is now almost 25 years old.

It depends on your family situation and what you plan on using the car for. These are both high performance vehicles but go about it in different ways. The GTS is a scalpel and the M3 a big hammer. If you have kids and need to use it to transport them than the GTS is off the table and could potentially choose a 992/991.2 911 instead or just get the M3. If you value a true sports car platform with a sweet flat six directly behind you that offers mid engine handling, the GTS is hands down the more fun chassis for that.

If you only value turbo charged fast cars, than the M3 is the German muscle car as someone already mentioned. Super fast in the straights with too much tech in the interior and more of a sport sedan with alot of capability. The M3 will still handle a curvy road, but its a large BMW sedan handling vs a light nimble sports car.

And get the Tesla if you hate cars and just want to brag about the 0-60 as you get wafted around. I would never get out of bed and intentionally drive a Tesla for fun.

Teslas are a LOT of fun….in a straight line. Because the Plaid is almost hypercar-fast. But all the roads I drive on have curves and they have speed limits which need at least cursory attention paid to them.

The styling of the new M3 is just too awful for me. I wouldn’t want it scaring the kids in the neighborhood. The GTS is way more elegant and fun to drive plus, you get the flat-six wail! I think Porsche did a great job on styling for the 718 - its going to age very gracefully.

That said, I haven’t driven either car. My wife just bought an X3 M40i and I’m blown away by how much fun it is to drive, how it handles and just how quick it is. It would probably destroy my 997 S in a straight line and you can take the whole family.

Why are you comparing a coupe to a sedan? They’re also different price points.
