Tomatis Headset for Auditory Processing Disorder

Anonymous
We were just given a diagnosis of Auditory Processing Disorder and were recommended Tomatis Method treatment. Has anyone done this? Results? Costs? Recommendations? Other impacts good or bad?

DD also has ADHD, severe Dysgraphia/impairment in written expression, and Dyspraxia. According to the doctor, the auditory integration training can help in some of these other areas as well.

Thank you for any feedback.

Who recommended it? I'd maybe talk to Gallaudet as they work with APD in the clinic.

Doctors don't diagnose APD. Audiologists do. Did an audiologist recommend Tomatis?

Ugh I did this for an “auditory processing disorder” diagnosis that was really adhd.

My son did start drawing better after the first round but otherwise I think it’s a crock of you-know-what.

Happy to answer any questions.

OP here.

The diagnosis came from the neuropsychologist who just completed our IEE and she recommended the treatment.

@13:58 haha, thanks for the feedback. I'm willing to try it if it would help with anything related to his education or his gross and fine motor coordination. I'm unclear yet whether it would be covered by our insurance so that's probably the biggest concern I have right now as to whether or not we would proceed.

It definitely did not help with my son’s adhd or education. Medication did. He has made progress with motor skills in the last year since we started (he’s now 5.5) but he’s also been in weekly OT and as mentioned, started adhd medication.

I suppose it can’t hurt… but it wasn’t cheap and it’s a substantial time investment.

That's bizarre a neuropsychologist can't diagnose APD. They can tell you that your kid has symptoms consistent with it, but the actual testing and diagnosis come from an audiologist.

@17:17 Thanks for your feedback. My son is on medication and it works so well the school said he no longer qualifies for his IEP because his ADHD doesn't impact his educational environment . That's what set us up with this road to the IEE because although he's well behaved, he's not thriving in school by anymeans. Failed SOLs, does not meet expectations on iready, etc.

Please take this advice. It's good that the evaluator raised the concern but they should have a complete assessment with someone who is an audiologist who specializes in APD. Gallaudet Speech Clinic does it as well as someone else but I forget who (should be listed in old threads).

Thanks for the info. I will look into whether or not FCPS will now pay for an assessment with an audiologist given what the neuropsychologist has shared.

Yes an audiologist needs to diagnosis
look into low level hearing aids for help with APD

It did nothing for our DD. Save your money.

Tomatis Method treatment recommended by SLP. Audiologist said it for kids that are sensitive to sound, price quoted $3K, which was not the case for us.
