Looking for a psychologist for medication management

Anonymous
I am looking for a psychologist to possibly go on medication for depression and/or anxiety. I had super hard changes in my life lately and I just need help feeling better. I have not motivation to do anything, I just want to watch Netflix all day. Having said that, I do have a full time job that I am thankful for. At least I get out of the house for 8-10 hours during the week. I do try to stay busy with friends on the weekends, but I just feel very blah.. I don't necessary want to go on medication, but if it helps me in a short term, I'll take it. Any recommendation is appreciated.

For medication, you need a psychiatrist. But you might also talk to your PCP. Mine handles my medication. She said if we tried a few things that didn’t work or I had any complications, she would have to refer me to a psychiatrist, but what we tried first has helped, so I didn’t need that.

I also highly recommend therapy which has helped me a great deal as well. There are various credentials for therapists - psychologist, clinical social worker, etc. You can do telehealth but you need someone who is licensed in your state.

What you’re looking for is a psychiatrist for meds. Using a PCP is fine once you have an accurate diagnosis and have figured out the right med and dose but I wouldn’t start there. It can take 6-8 weeks for meds to work and you might need to do some trial and error so I would also recommend a therapist to help you develop some strategies to feel better.

As others have said, your PCP or a psychiatrist should help.

I use LifeStance and see a psychiatrist and therapist virtually. I definitely recommend doing therapy in conjunction with medication because (in my opinion) the medication helps get you to a point where you are better able to talk about your issues and be a better participant in your therapy.

I use LiveHealth and see a psychiatrist. I really like the inline/video format

My PCP was willing to prescribe an SSRI for me as long as I was also working with a therapist and came in for periodic follow ups. If she’d had concerns at any point she would have then referred me to a psychiatrist for ongoing management.

OP here- I truly meant to say psychiatrist. Looking for a recommendation. I just started with a therapist. I agree with previous suggestions of therapy and medication.

where are you located? also recommend asking your therapist- as a psychologist I prefer to recommend people I know are good about communicating and collaborating with me. I would imagine your therapist has people they often work with.

I am in the Tysons area. The list my therapist gave me, was not helpful at all. Either not taking new patients or not available.

Not sure if they're taking new patients or not but try Fairfax Mental Health & Wellness.

SSRIs are not for “feeling blah.” They have significant side effects - they can completely kill your sex drive for one. They can make you feel really sick when you start them. And then you can feel sick for weeks coming off of them.

Have you tried therapy?
