| I’d love some information about travel basketball for my 10 year old daughter. We live in the Fairfax area. She is just finishing up her winter season with the Burke BB rec league, and I think we are ready to take it to the next level looking into the future. This is only her second winter playing, but she’s fast, athletic, and dribbles the ball fairly well, although definitely raw in other skills, so perhaps a lower level travel club would be best. Anything anyone can share would help as we are totally clueless—clubs, cost, commitment, how far you are traveling, etc. |
| Most of the tryouts are over. You can call around to clubs to see if they have openings. |
I didn’t think we would be getting onto a team now. I don’t even know when tryouts happen or what clubs would even be within her reach to call. |
| Like others have said, unfortunately tryouts for Spring basketball are mostly over though I am sure some teams are still accepting players. Check out the St. James--I believe they just had tryouts. |
| Sorry if my post was unclear. I am just trying to gather info at this point. I am not trying to get my daughter to tryouts right now |
| You should search this forum. There is a fair amount of discussion of girls BB, especially in NOVA. Also, if your daughter is trying to move from rec to travel, I’d suggest getting some individual training sessions. A trainer can teach her how to train to learn the ball handling and shooting she’ll need. Most kids without a knowledgeable adult to teach them end up wasting a lot of time because they don’t know what and how to practice (although girls tend to be better about this than boys). |
| Also, most trainers will know something about the travel team landscape and be able to offer some guidance. |

At the ES level Spring/Summer AAU
Cost: Anywhere from $400 - 800 (covers tournaments and uniform) Hidden Cost: Spectator fees (yes parents have to pay to watch their kids play $20/30 per person for the weekend) + Gas and Hotels Commitment: Hyper competitive teams will want to make basketball a priority. Most teams are fine with kids playing other sports. It all depends... Traveling: Development AAU Teams (less talented) will stay local. Competitive teams (middle of the pack) will have a couple of 2-4hr driving distance tournaments and rest are locals. Hyper Competitive teams will play a lot of out-state tournaments Clubs: You can search through this forum. I don't want to rank these teams. |

I would email some of the teams. Elevate Elite and Hurricanes field multiple teams, and may have spots.
The top teams at some of the top clubs just finished try outs, and a few girls that had accepted positions on lower teams at different clubs are now declining their offers to join these top clubs. There should be a few openings this week on the lower teams. |
| You could also try the Vogues. Less competitive but they field a large team. |
| Elevate, the Vogues and St. James are good starting points. |
| Thank you so much for these suggestions! I really appreciate the help and just giving me a place to start! |
| Try elevate elite. I don't know about your daughter's age group, but some have a third team that will take new players throughout the year |
|
I would focus on the following:
Spring/Summer: basketball camps and small group training, Rec Ball Summer: Tryout for Burke's Summer Travel Team. Most likely they'll play in the Fairfax Stars Summer League (it's all local gyms) Fall: More small group training and try out for Burke's County/Travel Team for FYCBL Winter League Winter: FYCBL Winter League Jan-Feb 2025: Tryout for an AAU Team |

You could sign up your daughter for the Hurricanes program and see if she likes the program for next year. https://mailchi.mp/3e399bee3aa7/arlington-travel-basketball-2023-open-gyms-6233787?e=595ba79d7e
