Renovations: Upcounty High Schools

When are the renovations at Poolesville going to be done? When will the Damascus renovations start? And is Clarksburg HS going to be renovated or redistricted?

Poolesville construction is supposed to be done this summer.

The Damascus project timeline is unclear, depending on a decision in the spring by the county executive on funding the requested capital budget.

Clarksburg is not slated for a renovation, but is part of the proposed boundary study and is expected to have some areas ultimately reassigned to the expanded space at Damascus.

They have a budget shortfall so they are postponing (or trying to outright cancel) renovations in favor of building Crown and Woodward in the short term.

For Damascus HS, there were two scenarios put forward as "non-recommended reductions." Scenario A delays the beginning of construction to 2029 with a completion date TBD. Scenario B delays the completion date to 2029. In the board's requested capital budget, the completion date is still 2027.

Poolesville High School construction will NOT be completed by this summer.

Phase 1 is close to completion and students will move into the phase 1 section when they return from spring break. This is six months later than originally scheduled.

The remaining old section of the school including the cafeteria will be demolished as part of phase 2 which was supposed to be completed by Dec 2024, but will clearly be delayed.

Poolesville phase II revised completion date is August 2025.

Wow. That's totally not what they said at the welcome meeting. They acted like new students would get a whole new school. Will they even have a cafeteria? An auditorium?

Poolesville was the squeaky wheel that got greased. Damascus and Wootton should learn from them - great case study on how to get what you want when the politics are against you. Sure, the building was old and in bad shape, but Wooton and Damascas are the same.

Shouldn't have been touched until after Northwood, Crown and Woodward were opened, but like I said, they squeaked loudly
