Club local to me, VSA, is interested in my kid joining their Pre-ECNL 2 team.
Was told that this is a feeder to the ECNL, but they said this team would play NCSL. I'm a bit confused. Sounds like a money grab. Guess I answered my own question but anybody else have any experiences? Really feel like I want to just keep my kid on rec at U11 |

Being on a pre-ECNL team is no guarantee of making an ECNL team.
Training would likely be better than on a rec team, and happen more often. If that's important to you and your child, it's not a money grab, as long as you understand your daughter will not necessarily go directly to ECNL from there. |
| ECNL starts at U13. Prior to that clubs that field ECNL teams place them in different leagues including NCSL. Like PP said, being on a pre team is no guarantee of making the team at U13. The ECNL tryouts will be filled with kids from all over the area, not just kids from your own club. |
| Seems a little disingenuous to be naming stuff like this then. Modern marketing I guess. |

For the 2 groups before ECNL, VSA has Pre-ECNL 1 and 2 teams. Because VDA is a partnership between VSA, PWSI, and Herndon, and they take kids from other clubs being on the pre-ECNL 1 team doesn't guarantee a spot on VDA at U13. Your kid would need to be a top kid on Pre-ECNL 1. Being mid season, there are 2 possibilities with a Pre-ECNL 2 offer: 1) your kid's skills and abilities aren't currently good enough for Pre-ECNL 1 or 2) they are good enough, but being midseason, the top team is full.
Sometimes when you get put on a team it is more difficult to move up then if you are a new player, but there is some movement between teams between seasons at VSA. If the goal is to eventually be on VDA, the training at VSA will be better than rec and you will be playing against better competition. I won't say its impossible, but very very few players go from a rec team straight to an ECNL team. |
Was told there's three teams. Pre-ECNL 1/2 and a premier red for U11 |
Yes, that is true. The Red team is the third team at VSA for that age group. |
| I'm a Pre-Lottery Winner |
| In this for Girls or Boys at VSA? |
| No such thing as pre-ecnl 2 whatever club that says that you should never be apart of |
Exactly. Especially when multiple clubs are allied to feed into the ECNL team. If the club kept 12 boys per team for 9v9, then combined to 20 players for 11v11, then the second team players would actually have a decent chance to make ECNL. In that case, "Pre-ECNL 2" would make sense. But this is not how it works at all. |
| They should name the next team down Pre-ECNL 3 |
Even without combined ECNL clubs, U13 is when a lot of the best players from small clubs or just clubs without ECNL or MLSNext start showing up at tryouts. I don't think a kind who was on a clubs' own second team ever had great odds of making ECNL |
| A kid on VSA’s active B team or Pre-ECNL 2 whatever you want to call it lol is not going to make U13 VDA when that time rolls around..not going to happen. |
| Premier red will be Pre-ECNL 3 soon. |
