| If your child goes to either of these schools are you happy with them? Pros and cons? Our DD will be entering K and we are looking to move. Many of our friends are very adamant about only picking W schools but we also have a budget to consider. Thanks for any insights! |

They’re both fine. Cloverly has more diversity and a strong PTA. Sherwood less diverse and I’m not sure how the PTA is. Principal at Cloverly is not great.
If you’re moving look at the MS and HS more than the ES. |
| Have you considered Stonegate Elementary? |
| Thanks, PPs. We’re still in the early stages of house hunting so we’re interested in all promising schools in the area. We’re also looking to stay under $900k for a SFH. |
| Cloverly and Stonegate are much more diverse. Sherwood ES and HS feel a bit like a time warp not only in terms of lack of diversity, but the type of school activities they prioritize. Keep in mind the Olney clusters have small secondary schools which mean about half as many options as larger schools. Even the DCC will have more offerings. It’s not just a comparison to W schools. |
Great small elementary school! |
Can you elaborate about the lack of diversity at Sherwood because according to this report card, it looks pretty diverse to me. https://ww2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/regulatoryaccountability/glance/currentyear/schools/02501.pdf |
Of the 3 schools mentioned in this thread, Sherwood ES is the only one majority white. That is less diverse than the other 2 |
Depends on your definition of diverse. |
Sherwood HS is quite diverse. Can’t speak to the ES as my kids went to Olney ES. I don’t know what half as many options means but my son will complete 12 APs and there are several he did not take. The school also has PLTW Engineering and several other career programs. Strong in theater and sports compared to rest of the county abd a gazillion clubs. what does half as many options mean exactly? |
| NP but PP was referring to half as many options for activities. My experience for the MS and HS for Sherwood is a wide selection of activities so not sure they are familiar with the schools- chess, sports, investing, comic book, various religious and cultural clubs. can’t speak to the cloverly schools though. |
| Check out Westover Elementary in Sherwood Forest Neighborhood, slightly south of where you're currently looking. |
Have you looked at a course bulletin for any secondary schools outside your cluster? Sherwood has less because the schools are smaller. Just look at the number of PT teachers and how many teachers they’ve cut in the last few years. Remember when Sherwood had 2 chorus teachers? |
what courses are you looking for that are not offered? |
My kids are at Sherwood high school, and we are very happy there. It doesn’t affect my family, but it might affect some so it’s good to know that they are not part of the consortium. I don’t remember the exact courses anymore, but my kids were looking at the course selections at other schools, and Sherwood does have a slimmer course catalog. Ultimately it worked out for us but it is something that some parents might want to take into account. For example, my kids were interested in the JROTC, which Sherwood does not offer but many other schools do. |
