Infertility Support and Discussion

I am at 9 weeks. Fetus stopped growing at 6.5 weeks. Doctor advises that I wait for a natural miscarriage vs. D&C due to scarring. She said if it doesn't happen within the next couple weeks - I can take some sort of pill to make it happen.
How long should I wait? I have been getting extremely slight brownish discharge when I wipe, but that's it. Also - has anyone taken this pill or what it is called? At the time, I thought I would have miscarried by now. |
| I am so sorry about your loss. In my case the miscarriage was not progressing and I chose to do a D&C. Actually, it's a lower risk than taking a pill (you can still have a tissue left in your uterus after misscarriage using a pill and have to a D&C to remove it anyway). I am surprised your doctor did not spell out all the pros and cons of both methods. I did a research and D&C was the way to go for me (less stressful, painful, emotional and I got no scarring). I was able to recover fast and got my period within 30 days. Whereas if you take a pill, the recovery can take weeks, thus delaying your period and your TTC efforts. Do your research or ask for a second opinion. |
| First, I am so sorry for your loss. M/c is never easy. I do agree with PP, however, abt d&c and researching further and/or getting a second opinion. I have had two missed m/cs in the past year and had a d&c for both. I did not want to wait to m/c and wanted to ensure that no tissue was left behind to further delay recovery. My RE recommended the d&c both times and I had testing after both to ensure there was no scarring. It may be that your doc does not do d&cs on a regular basis and therefore is concerned about scarring. |

OP, I'm sorry for your loss. So many of us have had to go through that pain, so know there's a lot of support out there for you. There is more discussion on this point if you go back on page and click on the thread: "If you have had a miscarriage."
Take care and good luck to you. |

Op sobsorry for your loss. I took the pill with my first missed mc at 11 weeks, embryo measured 6. For my second I did a D&c.
The hospital part of the d&c was horrible mentally, but the D&c was much easier physically, recovery was faster than with the pills. I also got my period back after 4 weeks with d&c as compared to 6!for pills. I would say do the d&c and ak for the tissue to be tested, not standard but I wish I had done Riis with my first |

OP here - thanks for your comments! I am not sure why my RE was so adamant about not doing a D&C. I am also now nervous that she might not be the best one do the procedure if I push for it. Do REs typically do the D&C or is it a doctor at the ER?
I would like to get a second opinion - can someone recommend anyone? I don't currently have an OB/GYN since we recently switched insurance policies, but will be willing to check out someone who is recommended. |
| OP, I was in your exact shoes in June. Ended up taking cytotek to miscarry. I was told that because embryo stopped living at around 6 weeks, a D&C was too invasive. I ended up only needing one dose of cytotek (OB inserted it down there) and cramps were pretty bad but I took 4 advils and managed. They heavy bleeding was about 2 days and then it was more like a period that was heavy. I will warn you though that what comes out is pretty substantial, and I was not prepared for that. With a D&C I think you don't get to see it all. But if you take cytotek, buy lots of maxipads and give yourself at least 2 days to deal with bleeding (you can't do much else). |
| PP here - I also wanted to add that I would do the pill again. I got my period back within 4 weeks and I did not think the recovery time was that long. |

Both an OB and an RE can do a D&C. I had my OB (Capital Women's Care at 21st and K) do one at Sibley; with another missed m/c, another RE at Shady Grove did it in their Rockville office (which was actually quicker and easier than Sibley).
You may want to ask your RE if you have any specific issue that is leading to the pill option -- do you have scarring already? an incompetent cervix? Maybe she's looking at other things in your chart that would predispose you to problems recovering from a D&C. |

I've had cytotec twice. It's not that bad, and it's not common for your body to retain anything, especially if the M/C is early. I bled heavy for 3-4 days, then light for another week. The only thing that stinks is that you can't use tampons, so you have to see the blood. I hadn't used a pad since I was 13, so I didn't like that. Each time, I had my period by 6 weeks, and it was normal. Once I was even able to get pregnant naturally the next cycle.
I do think the D&C scarring issue can be a big deal. When I delivered my first child, I was really slow to dilate and they kept asking me if I had any cervical scarring or any past D&C. It can dramatically increase your chances of a c-section. |
| I'm very sorry for your loss. I just had a d&c yesterday morning and it was quite easy and painless for me. This was the second one I had to have and chose to do the d&c over naturally miscarrying because I was already 3 weeks past the time the embryo had stopped growing and did not want to wait forever for it to pass. Also, I wanted them to test whatever tissue they could get to see if it was a chromosomal problem. I feel so much better just having it over. I don't have any experience with the pill, but the doctor did tell me it would cause a lot of cramping and I would be quite uncomfortable for a few days. I just felt the d&c would be the better option for me. |
