| Probably depends on the state but that was not our experience recently getting a new driver's license after a name change in Maryland. The license was mailed later and the person got a temporary document. |

| My son just got his license (same as ID) and he got a temporary printout that day with the license mailed a week or so later. The printout would have worked as an ID. |
| In VA, they would leave with a temporary paper license/ID. The real one will arrive in the mail later. |
