TAG does not come close to closing the gap between in state and out of state tuition at most MD and VA colleges. This is an embarassment for a DC that claims to care about educational equity! When will it increase? Are there no supporters on the Council? And no, it should not be further means tested. Upper income people in other states pay taxes and get in state tuition in return. We pay DC taxes and get pathetic expenditure on higher education. They don’t even attempt to make UDC into a strong institution. Where’s the vision that turned UMBC into an R1? |
Never. Poor kids can get financial aid. DC is broke and isn't going to spend more money to subsidize upper middle class kids' college degrees |
It's federal money so it doesn't cost DC anything. In 2021 Eleanor Holmes Norton succeeded in getting the House to pass an expanded program. But, that language was stripped by the Senate. Expanding DC TAG is normally one of Norton's priorities so I am sure she will keep trying. This year she may be distracted with the RFK transfer. You can read the discussion about Norton's previous attempt here: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/990354.page I am not sure if she did anything with regard to DC TAG last year. If she did, I didn't hear about it. |
DC has given the middle class a million reasons to leave already. Those still here are suckers that will be soaked and like it. No need to bend over for them. |
If you check the net price calculators it’s not actually true that lower income kids get their tuition covered. For example for a income of 45k, the expected price at UMBC is 30k OOS. You can’t even cover that with federal loans if you wanted to. |
Why does DC allow it to get stripped by the Senate? Where’s the political saavy of all the DC residents with an interest in this? |
It's true that the two Senators from DC failed to do their job. It's almost as if they've gone missing. I can't find them anywhere. I'm so glad that this forum has attracted political geniuses such as yourself. |
Why are some state schools cheaper than others? Life isn’t fair. |
If DC can lobby to get RFK back it can lobby for TAG. If DC can make national headlines for local residents organizing a recall, we can organize for TAG. |
because the state has a range of schools to accomodate different financial and educational needs! That’s what all states do. But not DC which gets a pass on higher ed because people mistakenly believe that DC residents get in-state tuition elsewhere. |
and jeez Jeff, are you actually using your platform to insult people who think DC should fund college appropriately? |
Well get busy lobbying. Don't expect everyone else to do the work for you. If you think that it is that easy, get it done. I have two kids in college so DC TAG is an important issue to me. If you are comparing DC TAG to RFK or recalls, you clearly have no understanding of the politics of the program. How do you think it sounds to people in Iowa when they hear that DC students are getting federal scholarships? Is doesn't play well. The last thing we want is national headlines about it. Take some time to research what happened with Norton's last effort. Nobody had any warning that the increased funding would be scraped. It literally was in the dark of night. The DC appropriations bill got jammed in to the omnibus spending bill that had to be passed to keep the government open. By the time we found out about it, it was too late. |
Again, DC TAG is not funded by DC. If you are going to complain that other people have no done your work for you, at least learn the basics of what you are discussing. |
Absolutely since DC doesn't control this! If you live in DC you should know this. |
You're right. Jeff, you should stand down. I'll be happy to stand in for you and use your platform to insult people who don't know WTF they are talking about. |
