My friend has been acting a bit alarming. At first it seemed like nothing much, just a little more agitated and lacking a filter than usual. I wrote it off as just being an off day but noticed she seemed a little different than usual. Then some strikingly uncharacteristic behavior (upset, irrational, loopy--my friend is usually even-keeled). Then vague/cryptic/maybe angry? I'm so confused. This is very unlike my friend. Has anyone else had this experience? I've known her for years and this is not typical at all. No known mental health issues other than normal midlife stress.

Yes, my brother. Eventually his wife insisted he go to the doctor, they asked if he had hit his head recently. He said yes so they ordered a scan. Discovered several lesions on the brain, he was in surgery the next day. Mets from lung cancer.
He had no physical illness type symptoms, just erratic behavior, odd conversations, strange thinking. |
Yes. Could be. |
Or UTI! Sometimes there’s some odd behavior with untreated UTI. |
Why is your first thought thyroid? |
it could be a number of medical issues, OP, so she should definitely consult a doctor and take a look at her medications (and other drugs).
When I'm hyperthyroid, my anxiety is debilitating and totally out of control, and I get severe panic attacks that land me in the ER. But other people can present as simply more irritated than usual. Steroid use, for certain conditions, makes people aggressive. Mania can make people agitated. All kinds of things. |
Is she on steroids for autoimmune issues like rheumatoid arthritis? |
Have you talked to your friend about your concerns? |
No, stop playing doctor and offer to drive them to a doctor. |
Could be:
-sleep deprivation -thyroid issues -side effect of allergy medication -psychological abuse from a partner -stress from work -early onset of dementia |
Could be medication side effects. I tried to take B compounds years ago and it made me nuts. I’m on semaglutide now and the only side effect I notice is I’m snappier at people and more irritable. |
NP who just started b compounds due to a deficiency. No idea they can make you nuts. Can you elaborate? |
I was weepy and emotional and sad and just completely opposite of my normal. I took them for a few weeks and couldn’t figure out what was wrong with me. My friend put it together and I went back to normal after I stopped. It was bizarre. I don’t think I was deficient though, my weirdo grandmother had been suggesting them to me for years so I thought I’d try them. |
How old is your friend? |
All of this plus I was very "off" until I found out i was severely anemic. Why, OP, did you jump to thyroid? |
