Why aren’t people signaling?

Anonymous
I drive a lot and I have noticed that in the past month or two people are just not signaling. I am not even talking about switching lanes on a highway, I am talking about not signaling before making left turns as I am driving in the opposite lame and similar, including at stop all way signs. I recently went to another city on the East coast the difference was significant. What fixes? It’s so unsafe!

Many people are awful. You’re just seeing this?

That works both ways.

Let me explain:

When I put my signal on to change lanes (which I always do, since using turn signals is almost a fetish with me) and check my mirror and I see you frantically accelerate from 5 car-lengths back to close the distance before I can move over, and then I swerve towards your lane - I already know I’m NOT going to hit you. But YOU don’t know that.

That adrenaline dumping panic in your chest from thinking I was about to crash into your side at 75 mph? Yeah- that’s just me - keeping you guessing.

See? Works both ways.

Because Maryland drivers are taught that signaling is optional at best.

This is not how to signal/switch lanes properly. First, you look for the window of opportunity. Then signal AS you are moving into the lane. You do not signal *before* you switch lanes. It is an indicator, not a request to enter the lane.

Ha! I think I see the problem. You have this completely backwards. The signal is used to show your *intention* to change lanes. You turn your signal on before and then make your lane change when clear. The signal does not entitle you to the new lane. You have to yield right of way to traffic already in the lane.

I don’t signal when it’s clear that people aren’t paying attention.

Don’t notice the many cars stacked up behind you in the left lane? Yeah, you won’t notice my signal or not.

I'm that guy. I use my turn signal all the time and, yes, sometimes I miss my exit because nobody will let me in. I've taught my kids to be vigilant about using them as well. So that's three of us.

Some people are eating or on their phone but I assume non-signalers are usually just being lazy/don't care.

If you signal to change lanes, crazy people speed up like it's a competition or 1 car in front of them is going to change their lives significantly.

People cut you off here if you signal. Very different from other places I have lived.

Exactly, there is no courtesy, it’s a red flag in front of the bull and you are blocked from turning.

Yes, this is true, but the fact that other people behave like idiots doesn't mean I should, too.

But what it if it's me, the blue Prius guy? If you signal, I will let you in. Every time.

In fact, if I figure out that you're trying to merge in without your signal, I still let you in.

Signaling is safer and more civilized.
