Wishing this was easier - discovery/williamsburg

We are looking at moving into the area. Have heard wonderful things about discovery but very mixed reviews for Williamsburg. Someone tell me they are having a great experience there. based on our conversation with administration we have major reservations.

My kid has had a good experience. Great teachers. Fairly little social drama. Principal is a disaster and the rest of the administration and teachers know it. He’s the weak link. But we’ve never had to deal with him.

You're lucky you haven't had to deal with him. Cannot say enough bad things. Do not recommend.

Discovery has had terrible teacher turnover in last few years.

Many of the popular teachers at Williamsburg transferred to Dorothy Hamm MS when it opened 4 or 5 years ago. The principal there (at Dorothy Hamm) is well-liked. And the facilities are definitely top notch.

You should also ask on MONA (Mothers of North Arlington).

FYI. For “neighborhood transfers” into a different school (other than the one your address is assigned to), the online application window opens on 19 February. It closes 8th March.

Info is on the APS website, re “transferring to another school”.

Do you have a kid who will be at Williamsburg soon? Things can change a lot in a couple years

You may know this, but this pyramid is prolly one of the better ones in Arlington. If you really want Yorktown and Discovery, you probably need to just deal with Williamsburg. This will probably come across as snarky but I don't mean it that way at all.

It’s a website resource, support, and social group for families who live in N Arlington. You’d need to join the group. You can easily find their website via a quick web search. It’s simply another source of information you can use and which may be helpful as you plan your move and navigate educational options.

If you haven’t purchased yet, you may want to look at other elememtary and middle schools like Taylor ES and Dorothy Hamm MS. If you already have a place, you can go on the APS website and request a neighborhood transfer if you really don’t like Williamsburg as you say. The window for transfers is only open for another week or so, so I’d do that soon.

Williamsburg is a fine school with great teachers. It is well run. Principal is not warm and fuzzy. And he is rough on discipline. We know first hand. But I wouldn’t go out of my way to avoid it.

None of the APS middle schools are great. It's one of the least bad options. I'd pick houses based on HS.

I think the OP just really dislikes the admin at Williamsburg, hence the neighborhood transfer.
