| My son is in 8th grade and wants to play at his high school next year. How competitive are tryouts in Fairfax county? what level should he be playing at now to have a reasonable expectation of making a jv or varsity team as a freshman? |
| @150 boys try out at the larger FCPS high schools. |

For McLean HS:
ECNL = In ECNL-R = 50/50 Lower teams = not likely |
| Some kids who only played rec made the JV and Varsity teams at our big public. |
At our private too---over some ECNL/MLSNext players too. |
| Sometimes the coaches pick the rec players so they can avoid crazy parents. |
And sometimes because they are more talented. |
|
High school soccer teams vary because many high school soccer coaches don't like travel team players. As they will always prioritize their travel team over their high school team. This includes missing practice and games.
This isn't all coaches, but for many this is an issue. |
Is this for boys and girls? |
Many high school soccer coaches are connected with private soccer clubs and advantage that club's players in the selection of the HS team. |
^^^This is the correct answer.^^^ |
This is absolutely not true. My kid is on the team. I believe there was a rec player last year on JV. |
No. This is the right answer. |
Boys |
Hard to know how to interpret the above rule of thumb. The relative age/class of a player makes a big difference. Certainly a national ECNL senior will have a much easier time making varsity than an national ENCL freshman. Similarly, there is at least one Regional ECNL player at a local high school who has been playing three years above their birth year (been playing club with and against graduating seniors) who made their varsity HS team as a freshman. |
