Is there anyway to skip math 4 and 5 at TJ? DC is currently in math 3 (algebra 2) as a freshman, and took AoPS precalculus over the summer and also completed the khan academy precalculus. I can't really find any information online about skipping math at tjhsst. |
Ask the guidance office for a placement test.

Why did you take Math 3 this year after already taking Precalculus last summer? |
Be careful about doing a summer course and then skipping it. Summer is a very short amount of time to learn material, with not much time for review. There's a risk of forgetting a lot of material when you leave it behind. Consider only trying to skip one semester, and taking time to review and reinforce the summer material. Or expect to spend time during the year reviewing in addition to doing the new calculus material.

I thought my child wouldn't be able to handle geometry over the summer, so I didn't sign him up. But he quickly learned geometry over the school year during 8th grade, and learned algebra 2 in the second semester of 8th grade year. I'm not sure why I didn't sign him up for summer algebra 2 but I didn't, and instead enrolled him in AOPS precalculus during the summer after 8th grade. |
I’m sure there is a way to skip because there was a sophomore in my kid’s Complex class. You should ask the Math department. |

Skipping is possible, however it depends. But skip and do what course? |
Math 5 or Calculus BC are plausible options. Anything else would disrupt the normal progression for no useful reason. |
Officially the highly privileged/connnected are allowed to do that. Independent study is not acceptable to TJ. It is not possible to catch up after you start TJ. You can try asking for an exception, if your student is truly exceptional. (Honor roll on AMC12+AIME or ARML in 9th?) From the website: https://tjhsst.fcps.edu/node/3332 https://tjhsst.fcps.edu/FAQMath Question: Which courses can I take in summer school? Answer (made more readable): Precalc in 8th(!) -> Research Statistics 1 in summer (This leads to Multi + Complex in 10th) Algebra 1 in 8th -> Geometry (Math 1,2) TJ Math 4 in 9th or 10th -> TJ Math 5. (This is for catching up if you started below Math 3, or somehow got into Math 3+4 in 9th) No other online courses or other summer school courses meet the requirements of TJ courses. Question: Is it possible to 'skip' a level of math at TJHSST? Answer: No. |
"Incoming freshmen who have completed Precalculus ..." ? What middle schools offer precalculus or beyond? what schools offer precalculus in |
Homeschool, perhaps? |
Convince a principal to let you take it at high school or online while in middle school. The earlier you can convince a principal to advance you (Algebra in 5th grade), the better, because the later principals have to put you in a math class, and you already have the credit. |
You’d take Precalculus at the high school while a middle schooler. |
Wont they have to first take Algebra 2 Trig for a year at high school and then another year of Precal, so two years of math at high school? What FCPS middle school allows this? |
