Officially the highly privileged/connnected are allowed to do that. 
Independent study is not acceptable to TJ. 
It is not possible to catch up after you start TJ.

You can try asking for an exception, if your student is truly exceptional. (Honor roll on AMC12+AIME or ARML in 9th?)

Precalc in 8th(!) -> Research Statistics 1 in summer
(This leads to Multi + Complex in 10th)

Algebra 1 in 8th ->  Geometry (Math 1,2)

TJ Math 4 in 9th or 10th ->  TJ Math 5.  (This is for catching up if you started below Math 3, or somehow got into Math 3+4 in 9th)

No other online courses or other summer school courses meet the requirements of TJ courses.
