Independent Studies - Private High Schools

Anonymous
Do any of your kids private high schools across the country offer independent studies? In an area that is niche and related to a potential major or academic interest?

Final project is either 25+ page research paper or similar academic achievement under tutelage of an advisor or local professor?

How are these types of projects viewed by colleges?

This seems like something a motivated kid at any high school could set up, but not something a school โ€œoffersโ€

As a professor, I would really have to be paid to undertake something like this - it is a _lot_ of work.

Our school offers independent study and most kids do it. Mine actually did it for two semesters, with the second semester building upon the momentum and research from the first. It was a great experience and I think is viewed positively by colleges, our students go to a lot of T20s and Ivies.
