We are new to area - renting- and are kids are slated for Shepherd ES (K and 2nd) - everyone we have met in the neighborhood with young kids does NOT send their kids to Shepherd.
We are thinking of buying a house near Woodlin ES - any Woodlin parents out there that can comment on the school? |
I live in the Woodlin district - we moved here because of the school, but wound up sending our kids to a language immersion program. It was a tough choice, because everyone we know loves Woodlin.
There was a time when the principal was an issue, and people were less enthusiastic, but apparently she's gone and the current principal gets rave reviews. Also, look at Greatschools.net: http://www.greatschools.org/maryland/silver-spring/989-Woodlin-Elementary-School/ |
You must have just hit on a small batch of parents, because I know many in the neighborhood do send their kids to Shepherd. Are you on the listserve? You could get your concerns about Shepherd answered there (as I don't mean to imply that there are no concerns with Shepherd). Also, I have heard wonderful things about Woodlin ES. |
Some of Woodlin will be moving to a new school in 2012. New school will be 640 students on a very small site with only one entrance. One entrance will be shared by cars, buses and pedestrians (students). Limited field area due to building restrictions. Check out possible boundary for the new school. |
If you buy a house in the Woodlin district, what are you going to do for middle and senior high? If Shepherd isn't good enough for you, then the middle and senior high in the Woodlin area probably won't be either. |
The boundaries for the new school will not be established until 6 months or so before it opens. But MCPS has said that only 100 kids will come from Woodlin. It's really Oakland Terrace that will provide the students, and they are horribly overcrowded. I don't understand PP reasoning, though. First, it's not true that there will only be one entrance. Second, it's a beautiful site and the school itself looks really cool (you can see the plans on the Oakland Terrace website). |
