My college students both have ADHD and are on medication. They've always had their meds prescribed by their pediatrician (although ADHD was diagnosed through a nueropsych in combination with other issues). Now that they are transitioning to adult doctors they are having trouble finding an internal medicine doctor who will renew their prescription. Is this common? Do they need to start seeing a psychiatrist now? FWIW, they've both been on the same meds for years and are happy with the dose so this is just for a renewed prescription.
Bumping this for visibility. Anyone?
Yes, switch them to a psychiatrist.
I know OBGYNs will prescribe ADHD meds. Why won't the doctors they have come across renew their meds? They might be approaching it the wrong way. If they are just calling up a doctor saying that they need ADHD meds, they might just get told no by a nurse or receptionist. If they make an appointment for a physical and bring in their medical records and ask about ADHD meds during that appointment, they might have more luck. Or at least they could get some advice.
Adult with ADHD here. I would agree with getting a psychiatrist. Many have virtual appointments now so it's not a burden and honestly there are many more options for meds now, so having an expert is good going forward. You at 20+ it seems (to this non doctor) that reviewing what you were taking 5+ years ago as a minor is a good idea.
My adult (19) kid sees a psychiatrist. She does virtual visits and they're super easy.
