Loving the new speed reductions on local roads - 20 mph is plenty

I would like to request speed reductions on several 40mph roads near Tysons Corner. How do you request a speed limit reduction in Fairfax County?

You’re already free to drive 20mph wherever you want. If you’re such a believer in it, do it. You don’t need to get the speed limit changed, you can just drive 20mph.

Be the change you want to see.

I am a slow driver, but so many drivers seem annoyed by it.

I do like the "20 is Plenty" movement in theory. But in reality, I don't believe anyone will be slowing down on residential streets at all. Well, maybe the people who were driving 25 as per the speed limit before will, but those people weren't the problem to begin with and are few and far between.

True. Yet maybe this pp is also a pedestrian or cyclist- and writing with a more nuanced view of the roads in Tysons.

Lower speed limits are great. What our state and county DOTs need to do in addition to this is create infrastructure that results in people naturally driving the speed limit.

I drive 20 on our residential street, that is also a cut through. I want the people behind me to realize it's an actual neighborhood, complete with an elementary school, and slow the F down. Some days it's nearly impossible to get mail or cross the street to walk the dog.

Not a fan.

-20 is not plenty (all over Rockville)

-Bike lanes reduce speed, lengthen the time of the commute to and from work significantly, and definitely more than the 30 seconds claimed by SHA and GGW (looking at Old Georgetown Road)

Oh, and neither has reduced the number of pedestrian deaths, which I believe has increased in Montgomery County, and has increased how much many of us spend on gas and how much pollution is in the air as cars are idling/sitting longer

Few people in NOVA actually the speed limit. The average actual driving speed throughout much of NOVA (off highways) probably nar 10mph over the posted speed limit, so, to achieve a 45mph target on a road, the posted speed should be 35mph.

Historically, Fairfax County hasn’t had any speed cameras anywhere, but, starting last year, the County began deploying them to school zones. Fairfax County plans to add speed cameras to another 40 sites around school zones in 2024.
