I know this is unsolicited, but an easy frosting is just butter, powdered sugar, a drop of milk and cocoa and is sooooo much better than anything that comes from the can. Just let the butter soften and mix!

Can you post exact measurements? It really does look easy and why buy frosting in the can. Sorry, but I don't do too well with "eyeball it" directions.

Not the PP, but I use the below measurements from Cook's Illustrated. The magazine says 12, but I can frost 24 cupcakes with this (we're light-handed with the frosting).

10 tablespoons unsalted butter , softened
1 cups confectioners' sugar
Pinch table salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 ounces semisweet or bittersweet chocolate , melted and cooled

In my stand mixer, I first beat the butter, then I ad the sugar and salt until it's all combined. Then I add the vanilla (if I used it; I think it tastes good without it, too) and then I beat in the chocolate. Easy and delicious!

I eyeball it, but I'd say you could mix a stick of butter with 2 cups of powdered sugar, 1/2 c cocoa (I sometimes will use a box of pudding mix) and 1-2T milk - depending on desired consistency.

OP here, thanks for the Duncan Hines suggestions. I just got it. The reason I need a premade frosting is because I am taking some cupcakes for a camping trip and my favorite chocolate frosting recipe has both cream cheese and butter and I don't want them to go bad in the heat, plus it will be easy to carry them unfrosted and do that once we are ready to eat. Then again, thanks to everyone for their recipes. Keep them coming!

it's possible to make the homemade buttercream more heat-stable but it involves the usage of crisco *HORRORS!!* it's actually very common to use shortening in frosting though, especially in a lot of white wedding cakes. people just don't realize it.

I do cake decorating as a hobby and yes, Crisco is preferred for decorating for the consistency. Kids love the stuff.
