ECNL Question

Is it better to be dual rostered with the club's RL team or be designated a discovery player? TIA.

Depends how good the primary team is. I’d guess discovery.

We have four or five "floaters" that are rostered on the RL team, but practice with the ECNL team a couple times a week. I haven't seen them play in our league games, but sometimes one or two will come up for the tournaments/showcases. They've definitely benefited from the experience.

I don't think anybody here would qualify for being a discovery player, doesn't the rule state that the players home address must be further than 200 miles from the ECNL club they're being rostered to?

No. Just need to play for a club that doesn’t have ECNL NL affiliate.

Discovery player is usually for a new player to the club from a smaller club. Dual roster is usaully for a player that is good enough for the ECNL team but for either depth at their position or dreaded politics practices with the ECNL team and plays regular season games with the ECRL team so all player s get maximized playing time.

When showcases come around most engaged Dual roster players are invited as playing time is split up differently for a showcase.

Use the discover player designation to see if you like the club, use the dual roster position to break into the club. Your kid will get out of it what they put into it.

As long as you go into a dual rostered situation understanding that you aren't actually on the ECNL team, it can be a great opportunity to get extra touches on the ball at a higher level. A few kids at our club are dual rostered - play on the ECNL RL team but train 1-2x per week with the ECNL team. They haven't ever had game opportunities (beyond scrimmages) but have had lots of higher level training in addition to their RL training.

OP here. Thank you and also thanks for not turning this thread into a mud slinging contest.

The term dual roster needs to be defined.

Players both ECNL and ECRL at a single club are all registered as ECNL. The only rule is that an ECNL player can only play one game per day. For clubs the only rule is that the max is 30 players per roster.

Technically clubs could have 30 players rostered on both the ECNL and ECRL teams at the same time. Then every week they could pick who plays ECNL and who plays ECRL. Technically in this situation all players would be dual rostered.

One other thing worth knowing is that generally when ECNL games are home ECRL games are away and vice versa.

ECNL gets 2 Discovery players per team (or age group I can’t remember)

Discovery players are guesting with an ECNL team and they are currently playing in a league other than ECNL or technically no league at all but this rarely happens. It’s a way to let players outside of ECNL participate in ECNL events. Discovery is usually used for recruitment.

This is exactly what is going to happen at McBrave next season. So unless you know you are first 13-14 on the roster of 30 you are only paying for ECNL not playing ECNL, college coaches know the difference. So find the team where you will play and be showcased accordingly cause that’s what your paying for
