Voluntary transfer - Tuckahoe to Cardinal

My DS is in kindergarten at Tuckahoe. APS is saying we can voluntarily transfer to Cardinal for 1st grade next year.

I am considering this because our PU was originally slated for Cardinal when it was being built, got shifted to Tuckahoe, and now looks to shift back to Cardinal when the next rezoning is complete, by my rough count when DS enters third grade

All else being equal, I would rather he switch now instead of when he is in third grade. But I also know this is still a gamble. We also have a daughter who will enter kindergarten when DS starts third grade, so would like to keep them at the same school

Any experienced APS parents have any advice here?

What next rezoning are you thinking of where the PU will shift back to Cardinal? Cardinal is already pretty full and Tuckahoe is not.

Also the rest of the Tuckahoe planning units not already at Williamsburg are likely to shift to Williamsburg in the middle school boundary process next year. So if you opt for Cardinal but the PU is still zoned to Tuckahoe, your child could be zoned for Williamsburg in the end where all the Cardinal PUs are zoned to Swanson.

With all those new houses coming online at intersection of McKinley and Wilson, are any new PUs are permanently going to Cardinal in the future? Seems unlikely?

Units 16050 & 16060

So it does look like 16050 is planned to go to Cardinal during the next rezoning

This is from last spring (June 2023) before they took Nottingham closure off the table though. Kind of doubt they’re moving kids out of tuckahoe with that not happening. Who knows.

Switch if there is something particular at the school you are looking for. Planning can change. Also, switching schools at 3rd grade is not that big of a deal.

If you are happy at tuckahoe I’d stay there. The smaller elementary experience is nice. (I’ve had a kid go through one of the mega schools and a smaller one.)

Agree don’t try to game out what APS will do. Only fairly certain fact is they really need to fill Williamsburg with someone. Time will tell who it is.

And they'd be switching schools with other classmates and kids in your planning unit if you're re-assigned.
