Middle school AAP

Anything you wish you had known as your child went from elementary school to middle school? Any advice.

If TJ is on your radar, don't go to a big TJ feeder middle school if you have a choice.

My DD wishes she had done honors instead of AAP. The content is the same, but her cohort would be wider. She has the same kids in a lot of classes, ones she doesn't really feel connected to in any way.

Try to get your kid involved in stuff in middle school that will carry over into high school. For example, my kids did band (but were not stellar musicians by any account) and due to high school band camp the summer after 8th grade, they entered high school knowing 100+ kids from the band "family." Any activity where they might start high school with an automatic group of "their" people is great.

Band? lol.

This is the type of adult that results from not feeling like they belonged in high school. Sad.

The only thing to really consider for middle school is math and possibly foreign language. The rest doesn’t show on your transcript so who cares. I think MS is a good place for kids to learn to take responsibility for their study habits etc before the high stakes of high school.

And I agree with trying to encourage joining activities at school to the extent possible - including music, theater, and sports if they’re interested. Not sure why the band hate here.

DD actually asked me that. I told her that life would be easier in HS if she understood the material in MS, and chances are good that her Biology class (for instance) is not going to slow down to cover the extreme basics that were covered in MS. So if you attempt to learn material without a proper foundation, you're likely to run into trouble sooner or later.
