We've gotten three emails from colleges requesting first semester grades now, "in order to make their admission decision." Is this standard, or does it mean our kid made it past one round of cuts?
I thought the first semester grades went out automatically. |
| FCPS sends mid year reports automatically to any school the student made a transcript/school profile request for. I don’t know how standard considering them is; my kid applied to 12 schools and I think only one included mid year grades in their admissions process. The others had already issued a decision of specifically said they didn’t look at them. |
Normal. Call the schools and find out. no one can answer that question here. Figure out what the problem is and deal with it |

My understanding is that some schools require mid-year reports, which is basically some kind of transcript of how the applicant did the first half of their senior year. I don't think it's indicative of anything if the school already has a policy of requiring mid-year reports. If the college doesn't require them, then I supposed it could mean something.
To piggyback OP's question, I'm unclear on the actual mechanics of mid-year reports. Is it the student that proactively procures the transcript or are they provided directly by most schools' counselors? |
| Also wondering about the process which seems unclear. For public high schools, does the student have to make an additional request within say Naviance (as was done in the fall for junior year-end grades)? Or does the initial fall request ensure that the counselor will submit midyear's as well to all schools on the Naviance list once available? |
Op: that's what I'm not sure about. Our counselor has been out all week, so waiting on them to get back to ask. |
Don't wait, ask a different counselor. Did your teen request transcripts be sent from the high school to the colleges? The request would be happened months ago. |
| ^^^^ would've happened |
Or call the college and ask what is missing! |
| At my DC’s MCPS school, they said they automatically send them to all schools that originally got transcripts. |
I thought this was the case at ours, but students had to go sign a form. In my experience, those kinds of requests mostly indicative that it's a required piece of information for that school, not that you've already passed through the first hoop. |
| My DD’s school use common apps, ,which you can check yourself whether the report has been submitted, after that the college will download it themselves, if needed. |
| Normal and automatic. Received from Colgate & Washington & Lee. |
For FCPS schools (I'm assuming all and not just ours), they send it out automatically to all schools we asked to send transcripts for. |
| At our MCPS school, my kid had to submit a separate request for a mid year report. He wouldn’t have known it was needed without getting the email from one of the schools he applied to that it was missing. |
