What is considered a good high school for X sport?

How do you tell how good your high school is considered to be in a given sport? Let's say there are 70 high school teams listed for your state in lacrosse. What ranking means you have a great lacrosse team? For example here are Maryland's rankings.

I got to say it varies from year to year.
I will say that some of the Catholic and private schools have ringers on their team that they bring in specifically for that sport. Basketball and lacrosse are sports where that comes to mind. The public school have a variety from year to year honestly. Example, Mclean varsity football lost every game except one in last year, and this year went to districts and I believe Regionals. |

| Where there are rich white wasps the schools will be good at lacrosse. Where there are rich white and Asian zoned to good public schools there will be good golf and tennis. |
