APS summer virtual econ and personal finance

Anonymous
I found lots of posts saying their student took APS summer virtual (VV) econ and personal finance so it seems like a reasonable option. But then I looked on the summer school page and it says "All students should block out 5 to 6 hours each weekday to complete the assigned work for the duration of the course." !! Really?? That seems like a lot to pair with a part time job or anything. (and actually more work than any of his current AP classes) If your student took this course, how much time did they spend on it on average?
Thanks!

My kid says it took them 2 to 6 hours, averaging about 4 hours a day.

Remember it’s a year long class they are squeezing into about a month. It’s all asynchronous, though.

For my kid, yes, really. It was about 6 hours a day for the personal finance part; a bit less for the Econ part. It’s technically self-paced, but there are deadlines every weekday, so it’s hard to catch up once you get behind. That said, we traveled during it, and the teacher was somewhat flexible with the deadlines (& kid got a little ahead on a weekend & kept working during the trip).

Thanks for the helpful replies! I guess it makes sense now thinking how much they are cramming into a short period of time.

Not in APS but my ACPS senior completed it online in one semester this year. It was far better than taking over last summer.

It seemed like a lot of work for DD. One thing to look at ( I don't know if these two options still exist) but when DD took it via APS Summer School her best friend took it through Virtual Virginia. The APS one was a lot more work. In addition to whatever the standard online modules are, the teacher was coming up with additional assignments he thought would be "fun." Which would be great in a semester class but not when trying to get it done in Summer.

I have two kids who took the VV version and I think they spent a couple hours a day. It was far less than 6.

My kids took that class over the summer and I would say it averaged more like 2 hours a day. I remember one section (can't remember if it was the econ half or the personal finance half) taking a LOT longer and I was worried for my kid, but once they got to the other half of the class it was much less work.
