Please provide suggestions for boarding schools in the USA for an average student (female). Not looking for Andover/Exeter but would like to identify places that have serious academics and are reasonably structured without too much pressure. Someplace friendly like Burke or Sandy Spring or St. Andrews but boarding. There should be team sports but it shouldn't be a super jock school.
Westtown? Sandy Spring (does it still have boarding)? |
| McDonogh school in Baltimore has a 5 day boarding program, but it's a very different experience from a traditional boarding school. |
| Madeira has boarding and is wonderful if it’s a good fit for your girl—the mod system is not for right for everyone. |
| Based on what you’re looking for, Madeira would be much too rigorous. |

I’ve heard good things about St. James School in Maryland. Our k-8 in Virginia seems to send a kid or two there every couple years.

All girls school has been a good choice for my kid—and she chose it.
My DD picked Emma Willard over Madeira because she was worried about forgetting material between mods. Emma Willard is strong in science, fine arts, and foreign languages. Very progressive. Strong social supports for girls. |
My daughter is at EW as well. She is loving it. |
Madeira is not suited for an "average" student, nor is it likely to admit one. |
| St Timothy’s outside of Baltimore. |
| Pomfret, Loomis, Miss Porter's, Governor's Academy |
| Mercersburg, Grier, The Hill School |
A dear friend of mine's daughter is a senior at EW and has had a fantastic experience there. She has also been accepted to some great top colleges (not Ivy but still very competitive).
