HS doesn’t have a swim team

One of the private schools we’re interesting in applying to doesn’t have a swim team

Can they swim for another high school during the winter season? I don’t think the admissions officer will have the answer to this lol

They cannot swim for another school.

There is a way to get a coach to "sponsor" the swimmer into a few meets and qualify for metros if that is of interest. But that still really isn't a team.

No. But in many ways this is a gift, really - they can just continue to swim for their club team and won't have to deal with the conflict/time burden of the bother of HS swim since it's not even an option. In theory, this would free up some time for a different activity or focus on studies. Your child may not appreciate it but you should consider this situation as an unintended "gift".

Have your kid start a team at the school.

OP here- didn’t think about it that way, thanks. Doesn’t matter for recruiting, right? Don’t know yet if that’s in the cards but don’t want to cut it off, either. Kid is strong club swimmer

Bwhahahah sure have a teen start a club at a school that I’m assuming has no pool. Good luck having Junior find pool space, insurance, coaches, let alone other kids who want to swim. This is the most ridiculous suggestion. This isn’t a chess club.

No impact on recruiting. Sometimes even helpful because of balance like PP mentions.

For example, Howard County doesn't have HS swimming.

A kid did this at St. Andrew's. Sure it's a lot of work, but with enthusiasm it can be done.

Actually, this happened at our school and now the team is quite successful.

St Andrew’s swims outside, right? How has that been? NCap uses the same site and I see the bus from time to time

The St. Andrews team has gotten pretty good. OP, there will people here who say its a blessing to not have to balance HS swimming with Club swimming, and they aren't wrong, but HS swimming can be really fun, so if your DC loves to swim and can choose between a school with swimming and one without, give it a long thought before deciding.

It will work out fine either way I’m sure… but I will say that high school swim has been a lot more fun for my kid than club swim. The meets are just more fun, there is more camaraderie, the kids bond over meals and bus rides and school spirit. I’m glad he was able to be part of it!
