Do most people have all their locks changed when they move into a new house?
How much does something like that typically cost? |
| Of course you should change the locks. You just need a locksmith to rekey them. It cost us $100 per door. |
| We didn’t, though I get why someone would want to. You can buy new locksets at the hardware store if you don’t want to pay for a locksmith. |
| You need to rekey the locks. Before we listed we had to do a lot to spruce up our home and we had at least half a dozen people who had access to the keys. Not to mention my parents and MIL, LOL. |
why didn't you????
|
| Absolutely re-key everything. It's a few hundred bucks for peace of mind. And the locksmith may be able to put everything onto one key, which is nice. We bought an old house and there was a different key for every door. You may also want to consider smart locks on one or more doors, which they can install in the same visit. |
Seriously. Not wise. |
| You’re supposed to but I never have. Oops. |
| I had this done. It was in the $200-300 range but it's been over 5 years so I'm sure it would be higher now. The more doors/locks you have, the higher the price. It was worth it though, for safety and to get all locks to use the same key! |

Yep, first thing we do when we take possession. You don't need to hire a locksmith, it is very DIY. Just go to Home Depot/lowes and tell them what you are looking for and that you want them to be all keyed together. It takes 10-15 minutes per door to swap out the hardware. Just watch a couple of videos on Youtube.
We priced a locksmith and they wanted $125+ per door to rekey. Way cheaper to buy new locks. |
| Yea absolutely, I think it was only around $150. |
Yes, definitely and same. Was able to have one key for all doors. $300 maybe? |
| It is easy enough to do yourself. I did it in our house and it took no more than an hour for three exterior doors. And I never did it before. So you don't have to pay a locksmith. |
| You can just replace the knobs and deadbolt giving you a new key. Much cheaper than actually rekeying the old one. |
| We have 5 doors on the first floor. We did not rekey when we bought, but did when spouse lost keys (I think it was at 22ish years). It was $1500, $300 per lock. FWIW, we've been in our home 25 years |
